Cub Scouts is a division of Boy Scouts for boys in grades 1-5. (Boy Scouts is for boys in grade 6/age 11 to grade 12/age 18).

The Cub Scout pack belongs to a community organization. This group makes sure your pack has good adult leaders, a place to meet, and exciting things to do. The group gets help from the Boy Scouts of America, which is part of Scouting around the world.  Pack 5 is affiliated with Congregation Ahavas Yisrael.

Approximately once per month we meet as a Pack, which is all the boys together at the Highland Park Recreation Center.  As a youth program of the synagogue, we observe kashrut, Jewish dietary laws and are Sabbath observant, meaning we do not do any activities between sundown Friday to sundown Saturday that would require us to ride in cars, write or cook. Of course, boys of all faiths are welcome to participate. (We have a partner Boy Scout Troop in Highland Park, Troop 55, that follows the same standards and is equally welcoming of all boys.)

Our Pack is part of a larger geographical district called Joyce Kilmer District that is a region of the Central New Jersey Council, whose headquarters are on Route 1 South in Monmouth Junction.

Our Pack has four smaller subgroups called Dens. See our home page for a list of Den leaders. Each Den is made up of boys of one grade in school.

  • Tiger - First grade boys
  • Wolf - Second grade boys
  • Bear - Third grade boys
  • Webelos I - Fourth grade boys
  • Webelos II - Fifth grade boys

At our Pack annual dinner, the Blue and Gold Dinner in early spring, Webelos II become Boy Scouts.

During the fall we have a major fundraiser. The Pack depends on fundraising to sponsor and subsidize activities.

We also participate in an annual camping weekend in late spring called Kinnus, which is sponsored by Jewish-affiliated Packs in New Jersey. Parents are encouraged to participate.

Annual dues are $45.00 per year. Checks should be made payable to Cub Pack 5. Payment plans are available, if needed, and subventions are available in case of need. Boy's Life subscription is $10.00.

Parents are always welcome to participate!
